Citrus Springs Whistling Duck

Citrus Springs Whistling Duck

This Whistling Duck is a common sight in our neighborhood in Citrus Springs, Vero Beach, FL.  The Whistling Duck, native to tropical and subtropical regions, is known for its distinctive vocalizations that resemble a whistle. These birds are medium-sized, with long legs, necks, and a unique color pattern. They are often found near wetlands, where they feed on seeds, insects, and aquatic plants. Whistling Ducks are social creatures, typically seen in flocks. Their behavior and vocal nature make them fascinating to observe.

The Great White Takes Flight

The Great White Takes Flight

The Great White Egret is a majestic wading bird known for its striking white feathers and elegant stance. Found at Stick Marsh near Fellsmere, FL, this bird gracefully navigates the wetlands in search of fish and other small aquatic creatures. Stick Marsh offers an ideal habitat with abundant food and serene nesting areas, making it a perfect spot to observe the Great White Egret in its natural setting.

Phillis The African Crowned Crain

Phillis The African Crowned Crain

This West African Crowned Crane, a marvel of avian majesty, resides at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. I call her Phillis.  Known for its striking crown of golden feathers, this crane captivates visitors with its regal presence. As it moves through its habitat, the crane exhibits behaviors that reflect its adaptability and grace. The farm provides a safe haven where this species can thrive, contributing to conservation efforts. Observing the Crowned Crane offers an educational experience, highlighting the importance of preserving diverse bird species and their natural environments. The crane's presence symbolizes hope and dedication to wildlife protection.

More Than I Can Chew

More Than I Can Chew

Cormorants exhibit remarkable hunting techniques, diving deep beneath the water's surface to chase their prey. These agile birds primarily feed on fish, swiftly catching them with their hooked bills. They often hunt in groups, strategically corralling fish into tight schools for easier capture. This communal approach not only enhances their hunting efficiency but also showcases their impressive coordination and teamwork. Besides fish, their diet includes small crustaceans and insects, ensuring they maintain a balanced and diverse intake. Cormorants' ability to dive and navigate underwater makes them formidable predators in their aquatic habitats.

Building Our Nest

Building Our Nest

A Roseate Spoonbill makes more than 50 trips to gather enough twigs and branches for its nest. Each journey from the marsh to its chosen tree, the bird skillfully balances the materials in its unique spoon-shaped bill. It’s dedication in this task is amazing, and it is a sight to behold.  This photograph was taken at Stick Marsh near Fellsmere, FL.  The best months to visit are March and April.  A trip to Stick Marsh is well worth it.

Backyard Sandhill Crane

Backyard Sandhill Crane

We have a pair of Sandhill Cranes (backyard birds) that often hang out in our neighborhood in Citrus Springs, Vero Beach, FL. They may turn up anywhere in the neighborhood. Today I took my morning walk with the hope of running into them. I was lucky. They feed close to the sidewalk (maybe 6 feet) and around the many ponds in the neighborhood. People walk by in the morning and these birds are not at all phased. Sometimes they paused their feeding to pose for a picture, which I appreciated.

Burrowing Owl

Burrowing Owl

Burrowing owls are all over Brian Piccolo Sports Park in Broward County, Florida. At first glance, this is an unlikely birding spot, with its assortment of baseball, football, soccer and cricket fields. Look a little closer though, and you’ll notice posts with flagging tape roping off holes in the middle of fields. Believe it or not, this is one of the best sites to see Florida Burrowing Owls in the state. The owl population here is doing quite well, and they’re the pride and joy of park staff, who accommodate the birds’ sometimes inconvenient choices of burrow locations. Respect their space, and you’ll get excellent views. They even hunt on game nights, when insects are attracted to the ball fields’ lights! This park is also a good location to see Red-tailed Hawk, White Ibis, Red-bellied Woodpecker and Loggerhead Shrikes. Scan the small ponds for winter ducks, and check the scattered trees for migratory songbirds. An entrance fee applies only on weekends and holidays. The visitor center has information about the trail.

This osprey picks up breakfast from the Rappahannock River. Even though we are in lockdown, he still needs to earn a living. Maybe there’s something to learn from the animals. Good thing he’s not fishing from a motorboat.

Old Mill Park is a good place to go, particularly in April, to see osprey and eagles. There is a large parking area, with an easy walk to the shores along the Rappahannock. The Rappahannock is narrow here so it’s easier to see the action that unfolds. Pick a location where the birds are perched in trees alongside the river.

This osprey needs to leave the scene of the pick-up in a hurry because if an eagle spots him, there will be an immediate aerial confrontation regarding ownership of this catch. Eagles are bigger and not above stealing prey from smaller birds. They are bullies.

It isn’t often that a wading bird misses its mark. Apparently, that’s what happened here. And although this little fish was probably scared to death, it did live to remember it.

Often referred to as a “marshpiper” for its habit of wading in deeper water than other sandpipers, the Greater Yellowlegs is heftier and longer billed than its lookalike, the Lesser Yellowlegs. Greater Yellowlegs are seen mostly during migration, as they pass between nesting grounds in the mosquito-ridden bogs of boreal Canada and wintering territories on marshes across the southern tier of the United States. With its flashy yellow legs, sturdy bill, and deliberate gait, it cuts a dashing, often solitary, figure on mudflats from coast to coast.

This taken with a Nikon D850 camera and Tamron 150 – 600mm G2 lens.

This egret catches a small but tasty snack. The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge has a diverse bird population. It’s common to see egrets, herons, cranes, and osprey, to name a few, feeding on fish, frogs, and snakes in the water. Egrets are proficient at catching prey in their beaks and occasionally use it to impale more difficult to swallow prey, such as frogs. This taken with a Nikon D850 camera and Tamron 150 – 600mm G2 lens.

Alligators are all over the place in the Florida wetlands. This lovely creature floated in next to some large birds feeding at the water’s edge. The birds don’t seem to be fazed, and I am sure they know the alligator is there. I was much farther away, and I was fazed. This taken with a Nikon D850 camera and Tamron 150 – 600mm G2 lens.

This image of doe with her fawn was taken along the Elk Run/Johnson Farm Trail at the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center. The trails are located at milepost 85.9 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, approximately 25 miles North East of Roanoke, VA. I was not expecting to see wildlife right on the trail, but there they were, actually two does with fawns on either side of the trail. I wish I had a longer lens on the camera at the time but 70mm was the longest option at my disposal. I am becoming famous these days for guessing wrong on what lens to mount of the camera for the hike. Fortunately for me, these deer were very obliging and quite happy to pose for the camera for as long as I cared to click away. They let me get very close, and I took a lot of shots.

This image was created November 2018 at City Dock in Fredericksburg, VA. The geese like to gather for breakfast in a large field downstream from City Dock. There are hundreds of geese there. These two are headed down river, joining the party at little late. Most have landed by 8:00 AM, and right now it’s a little crowded down there.

There are usually shots to be had here between sunrise and 8:00 AM. City Dock is easily accessible, so it’s one of my favorite places. There are three public overlooks close by that are ideal for setting up. Many birds fly past this location at approximately eye level, like these two, so opportunities for shots like this are common.

Geese always make their presence known, giving you a lot of time to get ready. Unlike hawks and eagles, you can hear them coming at least 15 seconds before they arrive. Super telephotos are helpful, but it’s possible to get reasonable shots with 200mm lenses here, as the birds fly past at pretty close ranges. This one was taken at 280mm.
