Anhingas are large water birds found near ponds, marshes, and slow rivers. Adults are about 30 to 37 inches long with a wingspan of about 3.7 feet. They often perch with their wings spread to dry them and absorb heat because their feathers become waterlogged during dives. Anhingas eat mainly fish, but they also take amphibians and small aquatic animals. They hunt underwater, using their sharp bill to spear prey. When swimming, their bodies stay mostly submerged, so the neck often shows above the water like a snake.
